Tory promise of EI for self-employed parents could benefit freelancers, indie publishers

During the federal election campaign, the Conservative Party of Canada promised to extend maternity and parental-leave benefits to self-employed Canadians. The Tories won a minority government yesteday and The Globe and Mail, in an article, predicts this motion is one that should  pass if and when it’s brought to the House of Commons.

“As a freelancer who is, at this exact moment, doing work with a sleeping 10-month old strapped to her torso, I would strongly welcome this,” wrote Toronto-based journalist Claire Gagné, via e-mail. “If he delivers.”
