In addition to the ACE Awards, the CMC also selects a recipient of the Caren King Scholarship and the Marketer of the Year. The Caren King scholarship consists of $3,000 to put toward furthering one’s career along the circulation path, while the Marketer of the Year, as the name implies, is in recognition of exemplary marketing success, and earns the recipient $500 cash.
This year’s Caren King Scholarship winner is Sharlene Clarke, Actual Media.
The 2010 Marketer of the Year award goes to Jennepher Hunter, Business Information Group.
Funny. I thought James Watson won the award for the Salon magazine campaign. At least that is who they announced at the luncheon...

Dave P. - I recall James' name being called at the award ceremony. It was the company, not the person that won the award. Congrats to all the winners!

Not a single award for any new-business direct mail, renewal series, or insert card? Were none submitted? How (sadly) times have changed! Seems like (considering how littered our email inboxes are, and how empty our snail-mailboxes) that any publisher actually MAILING an offer would probably do surprisingly well. Such is fashion.

Anonymous1 -- are you implying that these awards are given to the company and not the individuals? Then why did they even announce names?
If Joe Blow from CDS Global won an award, would it be ok if it was changed to the CEO's name? Something is definitely fishy, especially considering James not being with TAMI and Brian is the guy who writes the CMC Circulator.

That sounds like a conflict of interests. Is the CMC aware of this?

If Masthead did any sort of fact checking with their articles, they would find out that James Watson won the award. James used to work for Brian Gillett at TAMI. James was not at the luncheon to receive the award, so Brian accepted it (supposedly on his behalf, I assume). The CMC newsletter comes out and James Watson's name is replaced with Brian Gillett as the award winner. Brian happens to write the CMC newsletter. This isn't a complicated puzzle to figure out. Huge conflict of interest and the CMC should investigate.

Can everyone please lay this issue to rest? Masthead is reporting based on the CMC Circulator. Maybe, there was an error during the awards announcement?
9. James says:

Wow. I feel hmbled by the vote of support. To clear the air, the campaign was something that Brian and I worked on together. I submitted tha application on behalf of TAMi. So both of us should really receive the recognition. I cannot speak on Brian's decision not to include me in the circulator. We ended our business relationship amicably. Or at least that is my perception.
Congratulations to all the winners. Especially Sharlene Clarke for winning the scholarship. She deserves it.

Perhaps a CMC rep should explain their decision to change the winners' name?

I see that I need to weigh in here...
No disrespect intended, the award was submitted with credit to 'Laura Dunphy, Publisher, Salon Magazine', and 'Target Audience Management Inc.' (TAMi). The emailed submission was from James, so that credit was initially personalized to him for the presentation. As with any other applicant, we do not have the luxury of reviewing a proof of the presentation and making appropriate corrections. Note that every recognized achievement that goes through here touches on everyone and we celebrate our successes as a team - James can attest to that in regard to the previous wins. To simply correct the presentation for release to 'TAMi' was not consistent with the other awards, so if a name must be present, my name made the most sense. Nothing underhanded intended here.

As President of the CMC, I would like to clarify some of what has been written. In reading the comments, both Brian and James have clarified the situation regarding the award - I hope that all of you now feel the same way after reading them.
Each elected CMC Board member is responsible for a portfolio. Part of the responsibility for the Communications portfolio is the Circulator that Ron Sellwood has done an outstanding job fulfilling over the last 2 years. As all of you are aware - Ron is the CMC Past President and Director of Communications.
Regarding comments noted above, that the Circulator is written by Brian - please know that Ron creates, writes, edits and designs it. I approve it before sending to TAMI and Brian Gillett - and their ONLY role is the deployment of it to CMC members.
If anyone has any further comments, please feel free to call or email me directly. I would be happy to speak with you directly. Doug or Gloria at Masthead has my permission to give you my contact information.
On another note - since there are some of you so passionate about all of the Awards - I look forward to many submissions to the ACE Awards for next year. And the CMC would love for you to come and volunteer your time on the Board!
Respectfully, Tuppy

So it is CMC whom left James Watson's name off the Circulatory even though at the awards his name was definatly evident he was part of the winning campaign. Maybe left off because he is no longer with TAMi and CMC knew this because of a working relationship with TAMi (deployment). I believe CMC should recognize thier mistake and give James Watson his recognition and an appology. Which I noticed you did not do in your letter. Looking at the other awards it is clear that all those directly involved where named.

I agree with Anonymous. This would have never happened if Brian was not associated with the CMC. Surely, the award was made out in James' name for the ceremony. If that's the case, he should be given the award and CMC should issue a correction notice.

Everyone has had a good crack at this, including all principals involved. At this point in the discussion we have decided to close the comments.

I just wanted to give a shout out to Sharlene Clarke for the scholarship award... all of us on the Actual Media team are very proud of her and the leading work she is doing with our publications. Yay Shar!
