Cynthia Brouse dies
Cynthia Brouse, well known in the magazine industry for her teaching, writing and work as a copy editor died Saturday at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto following a long struggle with cancer.
Brouse was a longtime instructor of fact checking and research at Ryerson University. She was also a writer for many Canadian magazines including Saturday Night, Toronto Life, The New Quarterly, Chatelaine and countless others.
She was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award at the National Magazine Awards in 2009 and accepted it with a graceful speech, dedicating it to those “behind the scenes” who make magazines tick.
Brouse chronicled her struggle with cancer in a funny and frank manner on her blog, The Clothesline Saga.
Funeral and memorial plans have yet to be announced. Stay with Masthead for details as they become available.

The following link would benefit from a final copy edit—and I mean that with all good humour, as it's an outstanding homage, and well deserved. I hope Cynthia is out there somewhere, laughing without care at the minutiae that would wither beneath the laser eyes of such a formidable copy mother (a term coined by fellow editor Julia Armstrong, meaning "one who endures the tribulations of deadlines to bring magazines to fruition, and nurtures young editors and writers, schooling them in the finer points of copy editing and research.")
